China?s soap operas go mobile

Por Doris Obermair

Actually, there are more than 350 million mobile phone users in China, that’s more than in any other country. Those who have been to China will recognise that especially the tech-savvy OCPC (one child policy crowd) has incorporated mobile phones into their lives and are able to spend hours clued to the mini screens. Many of them carrying more than one mobile phone …

Now they have new mobile content: «The Appointment», a television soap opera that has been written exclusively for mobile phones, is very likely to become a new killer application among Chinese. A group of Beijing scriptwriters have written a mini-series based on 5 minutes episodes that can be watched on cell phones with Internet connection (so far only LG models).

«There is very little dialogue and a lot of close-ups because detail is lost on the small screen if characters make lots of gestures. The drama is very different from a traditional show on TV. We use a very short storytelling style. To hold the audience on such a small screen, each story will reach its climax in just a few minutes», says the producer Liu Hong in a CNN interview.

As soon as the price of mobile phones go down he predicts that those kind of mini-series will become a killer application and many will subscribe to the service.
